Staff and Decoys

As always we are in constant motion prepping for the 2013 season. We have our Job advertisements out on Kijiji and the HRDC looking for both summer employees and full time seasonal staff. We have been flooded with resumes this year, over fifty, and they are still coming. We should have all of our hiring done by late March and thanks to all for applying, but only those selected for interviews will be called back.

2013 will bring some new changes to the golf course and our staff. Miles Bishop our mechanic has moved on and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Stepping in to fill the position of Equipment Technician will be Bill Townsend, a journeyman equipment manger from a company called Eastern Turf.  Bill has already started at the golf course and has jumped in with both feet, organizing the shop and grinding some reels.  We feel he will be a welcome addition to the Turf department as well as a benefit to golf course in general.

Also leaving us will be Tony Dickie, our Spray Technician, who we thank and wish the best of luck to.  This position will be filled by John Connor, whom comes to us by way of Saint Georges Golf Course and Banif Springs Golf Course, two very affluently golf courses in Canada.  He also will be a welcome addition to the staff.

Because of the seasonal nature of the golf course industry in Canada, staff turn over each summer is quite common and can be difficult to manage.  If we are lucky our summer students work for us for two or three summers before heading down the path of their chosen careers.  For the most part we have to hire one or two new staff each year, but it is unusual to have to hire a completely new compliment. Unfortunately, this is one of those years.  Of the five 2012 summer students all are moving from summer jobs to life choices. We thank them and wish them luck, and hope the new batch of trainees are as good employees as the last.

In addition to new staff 2013 will bring us a few new projects on the golf course. The most major will be moving the tee decks on number 8.  Both the red and gold decks will be shifted to reduce the likelihood of being hit from errant balls shot from number 7. The actual locations of the new tee decks haven't been determined but they will definitely be pushed to the left into the long grass area. Stay tuned for further updates on this project.

Another project we are working on right now is the addition of a video camera and monitor on the tenth tee. The camera will point down the fairway and allow players to clearly, without question, identify if it is safe to tee off. This is another project we will be following through beginning to end, so stay tuned.

Our goose prevention methods have also been taken to a new level. Aside from the past procedures (goose fencing, eagle silhouettes, predator flags, spray able repellent and general harassment) we also plant to make use of a product called Goose-b-gone. You can view the product web page it if you click here. Essentially the device emits a goose distress signal two minutes in length, and ten minutes apart. We plan to install the device on number thirteen near the bridge. We have also purchased additional speakers to widen the effectiveness of the device. Another product added to the anti goose arsenal are the Coyote decoys, with life like features and actual moving tail. These will be moved on a daily basis, and hopefully will contribute to creating an undesirable environment for the geese.

Pretty scary stuff.
